Reiki Treatments

What is Reiki?

The word “Reiki” is most often translated as “universal life energy.” It is not associated with any particular religion or religious practice. Offered in a growing number of hospitals today, it is a proven technique designed to restore the natural balance and harmony to the body. It is gentle, painless, non-invasive, and it strengthens the body’s natural ability to heal itself. It can be used with both conventional and alternative therapies and can enhance their actions and lessen their side effects. There are no known contraindications, and it is safe under any circumstance for anyone of all ages. Because the purpose of Reiki is to help to increase your own self-healing powers, regular treatments can help maintain health and improve on all levels: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.

What happens during a Reiki session?

A typical Reiki session lasts about 60 minutes. Upon arrival, the practitioner may ask the client to remove any jewelry that he or she is wearing. Prior to the session, the practitioner may ask about concerns or questions that the client may have, and about what the client would like to achieve from the session. The client will remain fully clothed, lying comfortably on his or her back, with shoes removed, on a massage or Reiki table. For this reason, loose, comfortable clothing is suggested. The session can either be hands-on, during which the practitioner uses a light touch, or hands-off, when the practitioner’s hands are held slightly above the body. The client will wish to inform the practitioner if one method is preferred over the other.

The practitioner will then generally move through specific Reiki hand positions, beginning at the client’s head or feet. There is not a “right” or “wrong” way for the practitioner to complete the session, however. During the session, the client may experience sensations such as tingling, heat or coolness, or drowsiness. There may be no sensation at all, but in general, the session will be very relaxing and pleasant.
